Infancia Salmantina de Gerardo Gombau
Gerardo Gombau nació en la ciudad de Salamanca, España, el 3 de agosto de 1906. Fue hijo de un popular fotógrafo salmantino, Venancio Gombau, cuya imagen venía a las mentes de las personas, los primeros años, cuando se hablaba de Gerardo por su apellido.
Desde pequeño mostró interés por la música y fue apremiado por sus padres a adentrarse en ella, asignándole lecciones de piano y melodía a sus 6 años de edad. En 1917, a los 11 años de edad, inicia sus estudios de bachillerato y magisterio.
Entre 1920 y 1922 estudia como alumno libre del Real Conservatorio de Madrid, esto debido a que la ciudad de Salamanca no contaba con un Conservatorio de música. Un año después obtiene su título como profesor de piano.
Es en 1924 cuando se traslada a Madrid, dejando su ciudad natal durante casi 15 años, hasta 1939, cuando finaliza la guerra civil.
Retorno de Gombau a Salamanca en la posguerra
Gombau desarrollaría con el paso de los años un vínculo profundo con su ciudad natal, evocándola constantemente en sus obras musicales con alusiones charras. A pesar de no haber sido, en aquella época, una ciudad rebosante de actividad musical, Gombau pasaría gran parte de su vida en ella; en sus días de paso entre Madrid y Salamanca
Labor pedagógica Gombau en Salamanca
Gombau vuelve a Salamanca, recién recibido del Conservatorio Superior de Madrid. Se apreciaba en él una técnica y estética musical más madura, que denotaba el profesionalismo de un músico hábil.
La razón de su regreso está en el nuevo Conservatorio Regional de Salamanca, del cual se le había asignado como profesor de la Cátedra de Piano. Sin embargo, dedicarse a la pedagogía no sería la única actividad que realizaría en Salamanca, sino que sería partícipe del auge que llevaría a la ciudad a un florecimiento musical excepcional.

Cuerpo de Directores de Banda
En 1941 entra en el Cuerpo de Directores de Banda, cargo que, sin embargo, nunca llegaría a desempeñar.
El Trío Castilla
Posteriormente, se convierte en el pianista del Trío Castilla, con Antonio Arias al violín y Lorenzo Puga en el violoncelo. Es con este par que gana el galardón nacional y el Concurso Nacional de Música de Cámara en 1943. Sus actuaciones eran frecuentes en el Café Castilla, en conciertos del Conservatorio y del Casino. Sus interpretaciones casuales en el café crearon en la localidad la costumbre de escuchar allí la música en vivo, a la hora de la merienda y por las noches.
Orquesta Sinfónica de Salamanca
Gombau tuvo una importante participación de la Orquesta Sinfónica Salmantina, de la cual sería director efectivo junto al director honorario Bernardo García Bernalt. Fue una pequeña y temporal orquesta de músicos locales de Salamanca. El objetivo de la orquesta era darle interpretación a las obras de Beethoven y mostrar las piezas compuestas por músicos paisanos, que no recibían suficiente visibilidad de la gente debido a la falta de recursos.
Estos propósitos se llevaron a cabo en medida de lo económicamente posible para la orquesta, la cual aun así obtuvo excelentes resultados y una opinión pública positiva.

Conciertos Públicos
Gombau también fue partícipe de los conciertos organizados por el Conservatorio Regional. Estos tenían por objetivo mostrar las obras musicales contemporáneas más recientes de compositores españoles, a las cuales se le sumaban también las composiciones inéditas de los estudiantes del Conservatorio.
A esta actividad se sumaron compositores relevantes del momento, tal como Francisco Calés, José María Franco, Manuel Parada, Rebollo, Conrado del Campo y el propio Gerardo Gombau, que expusieron sus obras y escucharon las obras de los demás durante el evento.
Propósito de los conciertos públicos del Conservatorio de Salamanca
Esta actividad derivó en el propósito de dar más visibilidad a las composiciones contemporáneas de los autores españoles, así como la restauración de la memoria de autores antiguos, como por ejemplo Manuel Jose Doyagüe, compositor de música sacra, a quien se le homenajeó a través de un concierto en el cual Gombau participó tocando el piano.
Gombau interviene repetidas veces en entrevistas y prensa local, dando visibilidad a estas actividades, que se realizaban con amor y esmero, con el fin de renovar la ciudad de Salamanca a una nueva era musical.
